What began as a humble, volunteer-led trip 35 years ago has transformed into a nationwide movement. Because of our supporters, Big City Mountaineers has been able to cultivate confidence and resilience in the next generation by deepening their connection with the great outdoors.

As screens become more prevalent and anxiety and depression rates continue to rise, the young people of today need these revitalizing experiences now more than ever. Each adventure breaks down barriers and builds up opportunities for them to explore, thrive and gain skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

We Empower Youth to Change the World

Since 1990, Big City Mountaineers has been providing free, fully outfitted and professionally led outdoor trips for youth who might otherwise not have access to the transformative power of nature. This is much more than a chance to get some fresh air; it’s a proven approach to building self-esteem, self-efficacy and a sense of belonging for youth.

Our outdoor curriculum focuses on developing relationships with nature, community, joy and with oneself, all of which empower the next generation of young minds. Last year alone, we served over 400 youth on 88 trips spanning more than 4,500 program hours. And none of it would be possible without the support of our volunteers and donors, as well as the youth agency partners that strengthen the communities we serve.

Today, Big City Mountaineers operates in five metropolitan regions across the country, empowering thousands of youth. But there are many more young people we wish to serve in those communities who would greatly benefit from our youth adventure program. Everyone deserves a meaningful connection with nature, and our mission is to continue creating those opportunities.

Working with youth at BCM has been a privilege, and the magic that happens on a trip is something that can’t always be explained. The impact we can have on youth isn’t always seen immediately once we get home, but can last well beyond our involvement with the communities we serve.”

We support organizations like BCM that work to inspire adventure and provide opportunities to experience the outdoors, especially for those that may face barriers to entry. Actively bringing more youth into the outdoors also supports our #AdventureForever value by cultivating young conservationists and adventurers to care and advocate for our outdoor spaces and planet.”

Getting in touch with nature was not only a stress reliever, but it also opened a whole new world I plan to explore further in the future … It was amazing and really pretty; I’ve never smelled air so fresh in my life.”

Take Part in Our Adventure

There are plenty of ways to contribute to Big City Mountaineers and help us make the great outdoors more accessible. We greatly appreciate individual donations of all sizes, which are essential to the facilitation of our experiences. We also rely on brands and organizations that can donate outdoor gear such as tents, backpacks and protective clothing. Finally, we are always in search of volunteers to assist with our backcountry trips and help make an impact firsthand.
