Letter From the ED: Steadfast In Our Mission
BCM’s commitment to transformative outdoor experiences
For 35 years, Big City Mountaineers has remained unwavering in our commitment to providing transformative outdoor experiences for young people across the country who might not otherwise have access to nature’s profound benefits. This is just as true today as it was at any point in our history. Throughout subtle and seismic shifts in our social and political landscapes, our mission has served as a consistent and steady beacon: to break down barriers to outdoor access and provide life-changing experiences in nature for youth from disinvested communities—youth who too often have not seen themselves fully represented in outdoor spaces.
The past few weeks have brought significant upheaval across the nonprofit and social sectors. I want to assure you—our supporters, partners, and community—that BCM remains absolutely resolute in our purpose. We exist to empower young people through fully outfitted, professionally guided outdoor experiences that foster joy, growth, and self-discovery—100% free of charge to every youth participant.
This will never change. We will continue to deliver on our mission with the same level of dedication and impact that has defined BCM for the duration of our 35 year history.
Nature is for Everyone
BCM was founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to connect with nature, that certain communities experience increased barriers to access, and that we must commit to addressing such barriers so that all youth can experience a sense of belonging in outdoor spaces. Ensuring outdoor access for youth is a universal cause that is meaningful for people across all ages, cultures, and communities, connecting us all more deeply with our shared humanity.
With that said, many of the schools and afterschool programs with whom we partner are hurting. The philanthropic landscape is shifting and many of the public lands services we rely upon to run safe trips are adversely affected. To see our mission realized, we strongly believe that supporting these institutions must continue to be a priority. During these challenging times, our work to support youth and their wellness is critical. We are firmly committed to providing as many opportunities for youth nationwide to access the multitude of physical, mental, emotional, and developmental benefits that happen outdoors on BCM trips. BCM’s niche in this ecosystem is to steadily, and often without much fanfare, work within the community and on the ground: one young person at a time. Every day spent in the forest or night under the stars can make a profound difference for our participants.
Moving Forward Together
As we move into our 2025 program season, we know we can not do it on our own. BCM is made up of a very small and dedicated team who has always relied on the generosity and collaborative energy of folks who believe in the work we do. This has never been more true than right now. Your belief in the power of time spent outdoors fuels our ability to provide youth across the nation with these life-changing experiences. Your support ensures that no matter what external challenges may arise, BCM will continue to make the outdoors accessible for those young people who stand to benefit from it the most.
We stand firm in our mission, confident in our impact, and despite the many challenges we presently face, we are optimistic about the future. Nature remains steadfast through the seismic shifts of society—and so does BCM’s resolve to ensure that every young person can discover themselves and their limitless potential through nature.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey. The mountains, lakes, and trails await—and so does the next generation of young people who will find their footing, their voice, and their future among them.
With gratitude and resolve,
