Youth Backpacking Gear Checklist
TRAVEL DAYS
- Two changes of clothes (underwear, t-shirt, socks, pair of shorts)
- Something to read
- CDs to share in the van (no profanity, no disrespecting women/authority figures, no glorifying drugs or violence)
- Small or medium sized towel (optional)
- Spending money (Spending money for gifts, candy, etc prior to trip should be limited to $25 or less per teen)
- Personal care items (get sample-size toiletries for hike and travel)
- Feminine care items for girls
*Leave valuable items at home. Your travel gear and clothing may be stored in an insecure location.
HIKE
Weather conditions range from low 30s at night to mid 90s during the day. Layered clothing is a MUST. Snow and sleet are possible. Sleeping attire consists of clean shirt/socks/underwear. Clean socks must be worn at all times in the sleeping bag.
- 1 pair spare athletic shoes, closed toe sandals or water shoes for stream crossings and camp
- 3- 4 pairs socks
- 1 pair underwear per 1-2 days of hike (3-5)
- 1 swimsuit
- 1-2 Spandex or nylon sports bra for girls
- 1-2 pair shorts (NO JEANS, quick drying material preferred)
- 1 pair long pants (NO JEANS, quick drying material preferred)
- 2- 4 T-shirts (nylon dries faster than cotton)
- 1 long-sleeve shirt
- 1 visor/cap to keep sun off
- 2 Bandanas or buffs
- Personal care items (sample size toiletries and feminine hygiene items for girls)
- Lip protection
- Small tube of sunscreen
- Prescription medications
- 1 Travel size packet of Wet Wipes
ITEMS PROVIDED BY BCM (issued for the trip)
- 1 Full size backpack
- 1 sleeping bag
- 1 sleeping pad
- 1 tent for every 2-3 teens
- 1 pair Hiking boots (teens keep after trip)
- 2 pair Hiking Socks (teens keep after trip)
- 1 pair Fleece Pants
- 1 Fleece Jacket
- 1 Fleece Vest
- 1 Waterproof jacket
- Thermal under layer top & bottom
- Warm hat & gloves
- 1 cup, 1 spoon, 1 bowl
- 2 water bottles
