Teen opportunities

BCM values the continued development of our teen participants through our Peer Leadership program. We encourage our teens to stay involved with Big City Mountaineers in one of the following ways:

Employment opportunities:

Peer Leaders (one week during the summer only)

The Peer Leader position gives BCM alumni teens an opportunity to participate in our weeklong expeditions in a leadership role.  Some of their responsibilities are:

  • Displaying leadership qualities before, during and after their trip.
  • Maintaining a positive attitude and motivating their peers to achieve personal and team successes while in the field.
  • Participating in single-day outings with their group.
  • Assisting the Adult Team with the gear issuing, food distribution, proper use of gear and other logistical tasks as needed.
  • Working with the Team Leader to teach lessons, facilitate activities and lead the group in nightly discussions.

Field Program Coordinator (summer only)

The Field Program Coordinator position will give alumni teens a summer employment opportunity to learn the logistical side of BCM. Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Youth group preparation
  • Trip staging
  • In-person Training Day
  • Equipment & Clothing maintenance and preparation
  • Go outings support

Office Program Coordinator (year-round)

The Office Program Coordinator position will expose BCM alumni teens to the professional competencies that will help to further the teen in their professional career path.  Some of the tasks the teens will be asked to do on a consistent basis are:

  • Update database software as needed
  • Bulk mailings
  • Gear inventory and help assess gear needs for the following season
  • Teen recruitment
  • Single-day outings support
