Today's Lesson: Learning There's No "I" In We
Water Bottles

Expedition Survival Tip

It gets cold and rains out there in the wilderness so pack accordingly. And if all else fails there’s always the huddle together for warmth method.

Outcomes-Based Curriculum

At Big City Mountaineers, we have consciously and deliberately evolved and refined the curriculum for greatest impact over the past two decades. Over the weeklong expedition, teens are impelled into a journey in which they form into an effective expedition team through trust building and goal setting, then faced with increasingly difficult challenges while guided and encouraged by adult mentors and their peers. Finally, after a “peak” experience, the expedition teams return home having met physical and emotional challenges, reflected and learned, and transfers their learning to their lives at home.

Our curriculum incorporates elements and activities based on the following objectives:

  • Build character and citizenship
  • Improve individual self-esteem and self-efficacy
  • Increase sense of responsibility
  • Develop resiliency
  • Foster a care for others
  • Encourage group and individual goal setting

The Virtual Weeklong Expeditions describe how BCM implements some of the curriculum in more detail.
