Volunteer opportunities

RELATE Trips- Come volunteer with BCM on a 7-day backpacking trip for urban teens in the beautiful California wilderness. Trips all take place during July and August. We are always looking for new qualified volunteers to participate as adult mentors on the backpacking trips. All backpacking trips will start and end in San Leandro, CA and travel to wilderness areas in California. We will accept applications from new volunteers that live within 200 miles of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The first step to volunteering is to attend a New Volunteer Information Session to learn about Big City Mountaineers and your role as a volunteer.

Upcoming New Volunteer Information sessions include:

Monday March 8th, 2010 (recommended)
6:00-7:30pm

REI-Berkeley
1338 San Pablo Ave
Berkeley, CA 94702
(510) 527-4140

Please RSVP to Brie if you plan to attend.

If you can't attend the in-person session, you can join us on a conference call:

Tuesday March 9th, 2010
5:00pm-6:00pm Pacific Time
Please RSVP to Brie to receive call information.

Get Outdoors Events- GO events are single day adventures designed to re-unite past summer teens and volunteers while providing opportunities for new teens and volunteers to get involved with BCM. Stay tuned for a calendar of events!

MIP Year-Round Program: BCM is looking for male volunteers to participate in events in our MIP Program(Male Involvement Program). The program runs from October 2009 through July 2010. There will be 2 outings a month with the same group of young men from local high schools. The program ends with a 7-day BCM backpacking trip in the summer. If you are a male volunteer and interested in working with a small group of young men throughout the year, please contact Lloyd for more information or for a schedule of events.

Other California Programs

Urban Families Gateway Program: The Urban Families Gateway program aspires to connect urban teens and their families with recreational activities at local, public lands in Alameda County, California. Under-resourced teens and their family members can participate in single-day activities that include hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, and kayaking in an effort to give individuals positive and safe opportunities to interact together, raise awareness of healthy lifestyles, and increase use of local parks and outdoor recreation. Trips are mixed in gender and age, and act as a bridge to other exciting BCM and Alameda County outdoor experiences. Click here for more information.
